Chem-E-Car Competition

The Chem-E-Car Competition is an annual competition hosted by the annual American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). The goal of the event is to construct a Shoe-box sized car and compete with this at the competition.  Universities and Colleges participate in this with other North American and international teams.

Competition Rules

  • In order to participate in the Chem-E-Car Competition, your University team must have registered in the AIChE Registration form by February 11th. If there is any confusion regarding this, please contact us for assistance.
  • Individual teams will compete on two days.  On Friday, April 8th, the Safety Inspection will take place and the Chem-E-Car team posters will be evaluated. On Saturday, April 9th, the Performance Competition will take place.

Key Dates

    • March 5th
      • EDPs are due for their first revision.
    • March 25th
      • Chemical orders need to be sent to host schools to allow orders to be processed
        • See the “Bulk Registration Document” in the Chem-E-Car sheet
    • April 1st
      • Teams will submit their ChemECar spotlight video to be presented during the ChemECar performance competition.

    • Saturday, April 9th, 7:00 AM – 11:00 AM
      • Competition Day
      • 7:00 AM – 9:00 AM Chem-E-Car Chemicals will be made available
        •  The Chem-E-Car Safety Judges will follow up on any flagged issues from Friday (marked by the Regional Safety Coordinators).
        • Rules for waste disposal, safety/first aid supplies location, PPE usage, and other rules will be reviewed
        • Teams will get set up at tables and chemicals will be distributed
        • Each team will be notified of the distance and order 1 hour before start time.
      • 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM ChemECar Preformance Compeition
        • Each team will participate in two rounds of runs each team will be given a run time of 2 minutes.
        • A 15-minute break in between each round will be given to present the Spotlight video submissions for all participating teams’ cars.
        • After both rounds, scores will be compiled and winners will be announced shortly after.
        • After the competition, teams will be directed by safety judges to the appropriate waste disposal locations located in the competition area.
          • Any additional clean-up will be completed during this time
